Turkey
(officially known as the Republic of Turkey) is a country in the Eurasian region of the continents. This makes Turkey one of the few countries in the world that can be called transcontinental. It stretches across the Anatolian peninsula of western Asia and the Balkan region of southeastern Europe. Turkey borders eight countries in Europe and the Middle East: Greece, Bulgaria, Georgia, Armenia, Iraq, Syria, Azerbaijan, and Iran. To the south of Turkey lies the Mediterranean Sea as well as Cyprus. To the west is the Aegean Sea, and the Black Sea is to the north.
The idea of Turkey being transcontinental is not lost on the culture and heritage of the people of Turkey. The culture of Turkey has an east meets west tradition that is truly unique to this country. Turkey is also a strategically significant country, being sort of a buffer zone between the European Union, the Middle East, Russia, and Central Asia.
Turkey itself is a democratic country that has a political system that was established in 1923. It was established under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. This change came along as the result of the Ottoman Empire and the end of World War I. Since the war, Turkey has become more and more involved in the west through memberships in western organizations, such as the Council of Europe and NATO. But despite that, Turkey is still well connected with the industrial, economic, and political movements of the Eastern world.
Turkey’s diverse culture is due to the blend of elements of Greco-Roman, Anatolian, Ottoman, and Islamic. The westernization of this culture has not changed the root culture much, but it has opened up Turkey to include customs and traditions that combine the east with the west. After the fall of the Ottoman Empire, the government spent a lot of time and money in order to invest in fine arts establishments, including theaters, museums, and architecture. Visitors can see these and much more on a trip to Turkey. These resources for Turkish people actually led a role in the country becoming modern and more western. But people in this country still maintain their traditional values and religion.
The best example of the mix of eastern and western values can be seen in the music and literature of Turkey. There are many music schools throughout Turkey, even ones that teach the style of hip-hop. There is also a lot of Persian and Arabic literature that is available in Turkey.
