The country of Portugal is located on the Iberian Peninsula. It is located in the southwest of Europe and is the westernmost country is the European mainland. It borders Spain as well as the Atlantic Ocean. The Azores and Madeira archipelagos are also part of Portugal. Portugal is an important spot on the European continent because is has been settled since the prehistoric times by various peoples, including Celtic and Lusitanians. Most of the modern day borders of Portugal have been established since 1249.
Portugal reigned as a global empire during the 15th and 16th centuries, collecting many colonies and other territories throughout South America, Asia, and Africa. The last overseas territory belonging to Portugal was handed of over to China in 1999. Now Portugal is rated one of the world’s highest countries for quality of life. Portugal is interesting, in that even though there is a great quality of life, there is very little gross domestic product per capita compared to there European countries. Portugal also tops the list for being the seventh most peaceful country in the world.
Culture is an important part of Portuguese life. There are many customs and traditions that are evident in daily life, including religious practices and annual holidays. The literature is also one of the earliest literatures in the west. It not only developed through text, but song as well. Modern Portuguese poetry and literature finds its roots in neoclassic and contemporary styles.
Art also take’s precedent in Portuguese culture. The modernism movement brought with it a host of artists from Portugal who were heavily influenced by the French painters of the time. Some of these artists include Amadeo de Souza-Carodoso, Almada Negreiros, and Fernando Pessoa.
Sports are also very big in Portugal. Football is the most prominent sport. The legendary Eusebio is still a great symbol of Portuguese sports history. There are a number of world class football players throughout the world who were born in Portugal, including Luis Figo and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Visitors will first notice the culture, but they will stay for the delightful and unique cuisine. There are more than a hundred common recipes for dry cod in Portugal, the main staple of their diet. Many recipes also use lamb, beef, pork, and chicken. And for the visitors on the go, there are many fast food dishes that you can get in many restaurants throughout the country.
