Malta is a small island as well as an archipelago of seven other islands. Malta is a microstate of Europe, and is located off the coast of Sicily in the Mediterranean Sea. This means that Malta experience a warm Mediterranean climate throughout the year, making it a hot spot for tourism across Europe. The capital city of Malta is the historic Valletta. And because of Malta’s location, it has played several strategic roles during ancient and modern times. 

Most often the history off Malta is associated with its first rulers, the Knights of St. John. It is also connected to its deep religious roots. This is a Roman Catholic country, which has been practiced here for centuries. It is also the spot of the historical shipwreck of St. Paul. 

The country has two official languages: Maltese and English. The United Kingdom was the most recent ruling power before Malta became its own microstate, so this is how they came to adopt English as one of their languages. Malta is currently a member of both the Commonwealth of Nations as well as the European Union. Malta is a republic, has a parliamentary system mirroring that of the Westminster system. 

Because of the location of Malta, it is perfect for an island holiday. There are only about 93 km separating Malta from the island of Sicily. And with the indented coastline, Malta has the perfect place for natural harbors. The rest of the landscape consists of terraced fields and low hills. The highest point on the island is Ta’ Dmejrek. The island of Malta does not have lakes or rivers, but some of the other islands in the group have permanent fresh water. There is a popular belief that Malta is the most southern point in Europe, but this distinction actually belongs to the Greek island of Gavdos. 

The economy of Malta is very dependent on tourism. There are a number of great hotels on the islands that give people more of a reason to come to Malta for their holidays. Malta does not bring in the tourist numbers of some other islands in Europe, but it is slowly growing. 

Another one of the economy’s biggest contributors is the film production industry. There are many foreign films that are shooting in Malta throughout the year. There are many things to do and see, including the spectacular beaches and other great landmarks that have been on the island for centuries.
